2009/10 Achievements & Challeges E-mail
Achievements:
  • New development assessment tool for volunteers
  • Secured land for a communal food garden in Richmond
  • Developed and supported 140 household food gardens
  • School "make-over" in partnership with Epworth Girls High
  • Hosted 2 learners who now holds NQF5 in Community Development
  • Secured 216 foster care grants, 73 birth certificates & secured other grants
  • Caregiver's support groups reached 113 caregivers and 149 OVCs
  • Reached 53 OVCs through lifeskills programme and 78 attended the camp 
  • Eighteen ELC staff trained on soft and hard skills by various TCF partners
Challenges
  • Volunteer turn-over posed a challenge in sequencing the training
  • The increase in the number of indigent OVC households whilst serving them under reduced budget and reduced working hours for the staff
  • Introduction of new data collection and capturing system which needed significant time to be spent in training and supporting volunteers
  • Increasing work load to our welfare staff due to introduction of new activities
  • Lack of sufficient funding from the department of welfare to subsidise all three social workers. Instead only two currently receive any subsidy
  • Securing a permanent land for ELCs to develop infrastructure has proven to be a challenging task.
